Salt Water Baths - Why are the not good for my piercings?

Sea salt and sea salt water you will probably have heard and been recommended by someone to use "salt baths" on a wound or your new piercing.

It's had a reputation of being safe because its natural and inexpensive... but read on to see why this isn't the case.

Sea salt and other household salt derive from evaporating sea water, and during this process the salt left over can host other bacteria alongside it.

Putting this on your piercing can introduce new harmful bacteria and isn't going to clean it.

Adding water that isn't distilled or purified can also allow even more bacteria to multiply in the dark and warm environment.

All of the above resulting in swelling, redness, crusties, bumps and potential infection.

Salt water even in it's purest of states isn't suitable for cleaning your piercing. This is due to the levels of salt.

Irrigation saline wound washes have a sodium content of 0.9% which is the same ratio as our own bodies blood and tears, meaning it's perfectly suitable.

Keeping your piercing clean and dry daily in the form of a shower is also a sufficient method for healing your piercing.
